Cuba beat a resilient Trinidad &
Tobago
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 4, 2007.-
Cuba won its second match at the Men’s Pan American Cup but not
before clashing against a resilient squad from Trinidad & Tobago
and winning 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 30-28.
The spikes of Captain Yadier Sanchez were decisive in the fourth
set when Cuba overcame five set-points and finally got the
victory.
Sanchez paced the Cuban offense with 21 points and Raidel Gonzalez
had 14. Trinidadian Nolan Tash was the best of the match with 29,
Marc Honore added 16 and Sean Morrison chipped in 11.
It was the first time ever Trinidad & Tobago won a set against
Cuba .
“I am very happy with the way my boys reacted today showing some
character,” said Juan Gala, the Cuban coach. “We are continuing to
improve as the tournament goes on and my players feel more
comfortable.”
“It always exciting to play against Cuba ,” said Gideon Dickson,
the Trinidadian Coach. “We have a match against Panama tomorrow
and it is going to be a must-win situation, but I am confident
that we will advance to the quarterfinals.”
